An empty classroom tucked away in lush Windward Hills was in need of repair in anticipation of of little ones waiting to grow seeds of their future. From May 24 to May 25, volunteers of PFM and the Rotary Club of Tumon Bay helped renew the classroom for Guåhan Sustainable Culture.

President Rob Salas and other volunteers helped repaint the walls, lay new flooring, and cleared the overgrowth outside. This wasn't just for aesthetics but it was all for a safer and more welcoming learning environment. GSC President Michele shared, "We've been doing a lot of education here. During the school year, we host about three field trips a week, teaching students about the types of food we can grow on Guam and why local agriculture is important."

This project was jumpstarted with the intent of preparing the classroom for GSC's summer program. This summer program aims to connect students with cultural foods, elders, and traditional practices. "The goal with the property is to really grow our own food here and not be so reliant on imported food," Michele explained. "We want to support out farmers and create a space where they can cultivate crops locally."

GSC executive assistant Josh Laurente expressed "We're very grateful to the folks at PFM and the Rotary Club of Guam for joining us in this effort to renovate our classroom and create a center for learning about local agriculture, our culture, and the history and traditions of the CHamoru people who lived sustainably and self-sufficiently here on Guåhan for thousands of years."

Thank you to all the volunteers for your help and thank you to Guåhan Sustainable Culture for having us. We wish you best of wishes for your ongoing summer program!
