The Guam Women's Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a thought-provoking panel discussion titled "Rooted in Experience, Blooming with Perspective: Leading Across Generations." The event brought together professionals from diverse industries to share how leadership evolves through collaboration, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace change. Opening the session, emcee and Senior Business Coordinator of Proferre Inc., Leanna Dela Cruz, set the tone by highlighting the importance of intergenerational learning. "Leadership," she shared, "is built across generations, shaped by mentors, challenged by change, and carried forward by those willing to evolve."

During the discussion, PFM's own Maiko Nakamura and Williejo Dado, offered an insightful look at how she navigates integrating new digital tools and Al-driven systems into traditionally rigid institutional processes. She emphasized that resistance to change is not a roadblock but an opportunity to engage, listen, and co-create. By involving her team early in the process, she ensures that technological advancements are not imposed from the top down but developed collaboratively. "People buy into changes when they can see the value for themselves," she noted, describing initiatives like company-wide Lunch & Learn sessions that bring together field and office employees to explore emerging technologies in construction.
Nakamura continued on by sharing a deeply personal perspective on overcoming imposter syndrome in a competitive, male-dominated field. With humility and humor, she recounted her early challenges in construction management without an engineering background, admitting there were moments she questioned her place. Yet, rather than letting self-doubt define her, she reframed imposter syndrome as a reminder of growth. "It's not about removing it completely," she said, "but trusting in yourself and in others, that I can lead my team with confidence and humility." Her message resonated strongly, emphasizing that leadership is not about perfection but about continuous learning, collaboration, and honoring both one's journey and the expertise of others.

The panel concluded with a shared acknowledgment of how mentorship, empathy, and open communication are key to bridging generational gaps in the workplace. Each speaker demonstrated that while leadership styles may differ across age groups, the core values of respect, adaptability, and teamwork remain constant. The Guam Women's Chamber of Commerce once again provided a meaningful space for connection and dialogue, reminding all attendees that when experience meets innovation, and confidence meets curiosity, true progress begins.
